What drives the cost of a website
A website has no list price like a car. The price comes from a handful of questions worth answering before you ask for any quote. The clearer your answers, the easier it is to compare offers. These points affect the cost most:
- Scope: one page or several subpages
- Design: adapted template or a design of its own
- Features: form, map, booking, shop or integrations
- Content: who writes the copy and who supplies the images
- Languages: one or several
- Billing: fixed price or by the hour
- Running costs: domain, hosting, maintenance and changes
Website cost in Switzerland: what the market charges
A market analysis of 36 Swiss agencies on beyondweb.ch puts web agency hourly rates between CHF 120 and CHF 250. It prices an SME website from a web agency at CHF 5'000 to CHF 15'000. For a website builder or fixed-price package, the analysis gives CHF 2'000 to CHF 5'000.
The Swiss quote portal gryps.ch lists a simple homepage from approx. CHF 2'000 and platforms from about CHF 50'000. For a company site with four subpages, Gryps asked web designers in German-speaking Switzerland. The result: CHF 2'400 to 6'800, with an average of CHF 4'400. specialpage.ch gives CHF 2'000 to 8'000 for an SME company website.
The sources differ because they count different things. Some include copy and images, others assume you supply them yourself. So always compare quotes item by item, not just by the total. A quote without copy looks cheaper but costs you your own time. All three sources are written in German.

Worked example: the cost of the first year
An example makes the differences clear. We calculate the cost of the first year after launch, using our fixed prices. The maintenance plan costs 12 times CHF 100, so CHF 1'200 a year. Individual changes without a plan cost CHF 75 per hour.
- Business CHF 1'449 plus maintenance plan CHF 1'200 makes CHF 2'649 in the first year
- Ultimate CHF 2'199, with hosting and maintenance for the first year included: CHF 450 less
- Starter CHF 849 plus maintenance plan CHF 1'200 makes CHF 2'049 in the first year
- Starter CHF 849 plus two hours of changes at CHF 75 makes CHF 999
Monthly website costs: maintenance plan or hourly rate
Without a plan you only pay for what comes up. You pay for changes one at a time at CHF 75 per hour. How hosting and the domain are handled then, we agree with you before launch. For comparison, gryps.ch gives CHF 150 as the hourly rate for later changes. This makes sense if your site rarely changes.
If you change things more often, the maintenance plan is simpler. It costs CHF 100 per month, or CHF 600 every six months. Each term runs for six months. You can cancel with 45 days' notice before the end of a term. With Ultimate the first year is already paid for.
What to check in a quote
A low figure on a quote means little if a lot gets added later. Ask whether the price is fixed or grows with the hours worked. Find out who supplies the copy and images and what a later change costs. Also ask who owns the domain, hosting and code after launch.
Our quotes state all of this: fixed price, delivery date, content and logins in your name. To see what finished sites look like, browse our example websites. If you already have a site and are thinking about a fresh start, read about our website relaunch.
